The Things They Carried by Tim OBrien, is a short fib almost a group of custody serving in the Vietnam War. In these letters are no romantic tales, but to Lt. Cross it is. As he reads the letters he fantasies about the relationship they share, a relationship that does not exist at all the way he pictures it. He would imagine romantic camping trips into the White Mountains in the New Hampshire. He would sometimes taste the envelope flaps, acute her tongue had been there (OBrien 117). Martha is a round character in the story; she is in like manner an antagonist along with the war. Martha and the war cause forceful change in Lt. Crosss behavior passim the story. Lt.
