At first the linked States wished to be isolated from the contend, they did non want to get involved in a war that was so far away and didnt directly consider the U.S. An over whelming number of Americans were against entering the war against Germany. A extensive portion of Americans were pro-German. Eleven out of every 100 Americans had immigrated from Germany. They were the largest ethnic group in the U.S. The Irish and Jewish also did not support the allies. Pro- British feelings came about because we sold them war materials and England borrowed a great deal of money from the U.S to finance the war. They soon owed American banks and industries billions.There were two major events that changed Americas mind to enter the war. First, a German U-boat sunk the British ocean liner RMS Lusitania. This was considered a neutral ship by Americans that carried innocent passengers. America became stormy with this attack. Before the attack happened America sent a strongly worded note to Berlin stating that Germany would be responsible for any American ships be sunk. The second major event was the Zimmerman telegraph. In the early 1917s Germany sent a coded message to Mexico promising them U.
