Current Controversies Over the First and Second Amendments

One of the conditions that states asked for when ratifying the fender unify States Constitution was that it would include some Amendments protecting the prefatorial human rights of the citizens. On September 25, 1789 the First Congress of the United States proposed twelve amendments, the last ten of which became realizen as The snout of Rights. Amendment I

Amendment II
A well regulated militia, creation necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the deal to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

Nearly 220 historic period later, Americans are still debating what was actually meant by the authors. Obviously we know that we are allowed freedom of speech, but what about religion? We know that Congress doesn’t deny anyone the right to establish or practice a religion.



The only way that would happen is if the practices of that religion imposed on anyone else’s rights. That is where today’s controversy arises. Most of it has to deal with the separation of church and state. In allowing people the freedom to freely practice their chosen religion, ultimately they were to a fault allowing people not to practice a religion.
Several appeal cases have been heard recently with regard to saying the imbibe of Allegiance in public, government funded schools. The argument is that it contains the phrase, “One nation, chthonic God” and not everyone believes in a god, so they cannot be made to recite it.
