A good personal example of a authority I have encountered where I attempted to process a person who appeared to be in a state of aesculapian emergency; was when I was walking along the high roadway on a night out. I came across a group of some 5 teenagers, clearly drunk, who were gathered just about a girl who had dudd and was apparently unconscious. Whilst there was a mountain of panic, nobody seemed to be actually helping the girl; as I had recently been trained in first aid, I felt confident enough to assist her, but on my approach, and hearing me call for an ambulance, she stood up and walked away. Apparently she had an argument with her boyfriend, and was faking the collapse for attention.
On closer analysis of the incident, it would appear that in union with the Arousal/Cost/Reward model as proposed by Piliavin et al (1981) that I, as a bystander initially experienced arousal, as my heart began to race with the anticipation of a serious event.

I felt concern for the person, who was of a similar ilk to me; thus I found it easier to empathise with her situation, on weighing up the cost/reward of helping in this situation, felt compelled to assist as I was qualified to do so. In a study conducted by Bernstein, Crandall and Kitayama (1994), they suggest that females are more probably to help than males in a situation. This could have been seen as be true in this instance, as there were umpteen males around who appeared unwilling to help.
An example of a situation I witnessed where bystanders (including myself) were backward to help was in a local bus station, where a homeless person, who appeared to be intoxicated; fell, causing him to sustain a severe head injury.
