Theodore Dreiser Biography Theodore Dreiser was born as Herman Theodore Dreiser on August 27, 1871, and he pass his childhood in Terre Haute, Indiana. His father had emigrated from Mayen, Germany in 1844 into New England and the Midwest, where the legal age of Germans sett lead. His incur was from the Mennonite family from Ohio. She ended up disowned for marrying the father since her family was anti-papist and he was papistical Catholic. In the 1860s, his father attempted to establish his own woollen mill, but it was devoured in a fire, which led to Dreiser living in a poor family. Dreisers childhood coincided with family poerty, where they were constantly curious for economic stability. Through his first sixteen years, he lived in five different towns, at times relocating only with his mother and two of his siblings. In the end, Dreisers early life was emotionally unstable. The German American parochial schools he attended declined the educational opportunities from such strict Roman Catholic training. The strictness led Dreisers developing critique of Catholicism and put him into his involve for exploring alternative forms of religious experience. At the age of fifteen, Dreiser moved to scratch and took on the jobs like washing dishes, clerking a hardware store, and tracing freight cars.
